Organ Music for St. Cecilia’s Day!

A NOTE ON THE MUSIC: Most people associate the phrase “Bach’s D minor Toccata” with the movie Phantom of the Opera, and the piece’s dramatic first three notes, followed by a fast downward scale. This was an early work by the young J.S. Bach. It is nicknamed “the Fiddle,” and is not considered very difficult to play.

Today’s dedicatory piece, however, is another D minor Toccata by Bach, nicknamed “The Dorian.” Bach wrote it during his mature master period, and it is considered very difficult indeed.  Here’s what to listen for:

• The Theme:This consists of eight very fast (16th) notes that are announced immediately at the beginning. Bach relentlessly repeats the eight-note theme — at least 200 times! — in the high, middle and low ranges throughout the piece. He takes it through a series of changing keys, turns it upside down, flips it backwards, makes it sound sad at one point, solemn at another, happy at another, stretches the intervals in it, and performs a number of other astounding composer’s tricks.
• The Bass:The rumbly bass notes on an organ are played on the pedals – a large keyboard of black and white notes beneath the organist that he plays with his feet. The organist’s feet have to fly in the Dorian Toccata because the theme is so fast. Listen for the bass.
• The Keyboard Changes:The organist gets loud and softer contrasting sounds on the organ by changing from one keyboard to another, and then back again. In the Dorian, Bach has the organist do this at breakneck speed again and again.
• Contrary Motion:And as if this all weren’t difficult enough, Bach has passages where the organist’s feet are going downwards in the bass, while his hands are going upwards on the keyboards, all very, very fast.

The Dorian Toccata is considered one of the great pieces of the organ repertory, and we are pleased to have it played for the dedication of our organ.

Since the acquisition of its first church building in the Cincinnati area in 1980, St. Gertrude the Great parish has always been known for the variety and the splendor of its liturgical and devotional observances.

And beginning in the twenty-first century, moreover, St. Gertrude’s has been able to bring many of these to Catholics throughout the world via its daily live webcasts over the internet.

The theme of this year’s calendar is Seasons and Sacramentals, a sampler of photos of various ceremonies and observances that take place during the liturgical year at St. Gertrude the Great Church, West Chester, Ohio.

E’la Francia liberale e anticristiana che non permette ai bambini di avere a scuola il Crocifisso, che condanna Dieudonné per la sua satira, la Francia, e l’Europa, che adesso si chiedono “perché?”.Ma c’è anche un’altra Europa, la cui immagine sana e pulita è quella di una Polonia che riunisce centinaia di migliaia di giovani, e di uomini e donne di ogni età, al canto di “Polonia ai polacchi” e “Dio, Onore e Patria”, una terra che non conosce unioni civili per i gay, che rifiuta l’ aborto, che non vuole immigrazione, una nazione fiera con un Parlamento senza più sinistre e con scuole senza gender. Di chi è il futuro d’Europa? Di chi grida al vento il vuoto e falso mito della tolleranza o di chi marcia cantando “Dio Onore e Patria”?Noi la riposta la conosciamo, da tempo.

In addition to being the month of the Holy Souls, November is also the month of All Saints, and a good time to honor your favorite saints. Lighting a votive candle before a shrine or image honoring Our Lord, Our Lady or a saint is a venerable Catholic tradition symbolizing the desire to present our prayer in church day and night.

St. Gertrude the Great Church contains a vast array of beautiful shrines, statues and paintings in the altar reredos, the sanctuary, the votive altars, the side chapel and the nave.

On the first show in a new miniseries of Trad Controversies, His Excellency Bishop Daniel Dolan and Father Anthony Cekada join us to discuss SSPV’s policy of forbidding parishioners to assist at the Masses of certain other traditional Catholic groups and clergy, and refusing sacraments to those who do.

Father Clarence Kelly initiated this policy in 1989. In the more than twenty-five years that have passed since then, most traditional Catholics have the impression that the controversy originated in a dispute over the validity of sacraments conferred by Abp. Pierre-Martin Ngo-din-Thuc, or over associations with the CMRI (Congregation of Mary Immaculate) of Spokane, Washington.
