The proto-traditionalists of 1969 engineered a lasting indictment against the New Mass in the form of The Ottaviani Intervention, presenting Paul VI and his modernist team with a nasty problem: How to stifle the accusations that the new rite was  indeed the “Mass of Luther.”

The solution: salt the introductory document for the New Mass with a few Catholic terms, but leave the protestant and modernist rite itself untouched.
